TODAY’S picture comes from January 1973 and shows workmen repairing the roof of College Gates, Deansway under the cover of a temporary scaffold and tin roof. The Georgian building was being renovated for the Portman Building Society when it was discovered that most of the roof timbers had dry rot. Portman remained in place for almost 40 years before the branch closed. The Grade II-listed building now houses a Zizzi restaurant
