A NEW school which is being built due to a shortfall of places in the north of the city is set to open this September.

North Worcester Primary Academy is on track to open its doors to new pupils this year, after construction of the substructure and steel frame was completed and the main roof is nearly done.

The new school was given the go-ahead after high demand in the north of city lead Northwick Manor Primary School to offer a fourth 'bulge' class in 2016 after 30 pupils living in the catchment were unable to find spaces at their closest schools.

Following a tour around the development site, city MP Robin Walker, said: “There has been a desperate need for school places in north Worcester and in recent years we have seen schools provide bulge classes to deal with that.2

Mr Walker added: “I am so excited to see the first new primary school actually being delivered and to see the construction that is going on. I think this will be a great facility for local people. It will be a lovely school providing a light and spacious area and I think it is something parents will be excited about. It is great we have a local trust who run many local schools who are looking after it and making sure it will fit in with the rest of the education community. It meets a real need. It’s brilliant to see the first brand new primary school come to Worcester in many decades.”

When complete, North Worcester Primary will use the latest education-specific design ideas and technology within a modern school building.

Landscaped grounds will include a year-round astroturf sports field as well as a well-established forest school area.

Classrooms will have climate control while specialist subject rooms will give the space and resources for pupils to take part in regular practical activities in STEM subjects and food technology.

Sian Williams has been appointed as executive headteacher at the school, in John Comyn Drive, Worcester.

Kate Brunt, chief executive of The Rivers Trust, which will run the school, said: “The local schools are over subscribed and there is a necessity for more places in the local community, especially with the new builds.

“This will be amazing for The Rivers Trust because it is more collaboration. We will be bringing our other schools here on a regular basis.”
