Spring is in the air. Time to dig out last year’s summer wardrobe. Does it fit? Typically most of us gain a little weight over the winter and it’s undoubtedly cheaper to shed those extra pounds than to buy new clothes.

So, it’s off to the gym – right? Not necessarily; here are a few tips which can help to increase our fitness level and lose weight and it won’t cost us a penny.

First, find a fitness friend. Working alongside somebody, virtually or face to face, helps us to stick with it. Then find something that you both like doing: jogging or jiving, hill walking or hopscotch, the choice is yours.

If you need inspiration or encouragement, check out the following websites which offer a wide range of fitness videos to get us moving.

The British Heart Foundation says ‘Every 10 minutes counts’ and provides a 10-minute workout video, saying that even the busiest of us can manage 10 minutes a day.

The NHS also offers a wealth of information and guidance, including workouts on everything from pilates to belly dancing.

Bupa provides targeted advice for real life projects. Whether you need the kids to be part of it, you’re preparing for a marathon or are just a bit older than regular gym bunnies, there is something for everyone!

Even the National Trust is offering a 31-day outdoors fitness plan and it’s free to anyone.

Personally, I enjoy bopping around my kitchen to my favourite tunes. It certainly burns those calories, though I pull the blind first.

Gentle exercise is fine for most people but it is advisable to check with the doctor before embarking on anything new.
