IT was encouraging to see Worcestershire County Cricket Club pledge to reform its culture and ethos after the Alex Hepburn rape trial.

To see a club actively taking steps to educate its staff and prevent similar incidents happening in the future is highly encouraging and deserves to be commended.

That being said, it would have been right for the club to apologise to the victim publicly.

As chief executive of West Mercia Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre Jocelyn Anderson said, rape is a deeply damaging and personal crime, and its after effects can change a person for the rest of their life.

It would be good to see the club apologise formally to the victim, as well as taking up the offer made by the support centre to send out a stronger message and prevent further incidents such as this one.

Worcestershire CCC chairman Fanos Hira summed up the mood when he said he was appalled by the details of the Hepburn case, and the club is right to be actively trying to educate its members of staff with a new set of values.
