A POLITICIAN has visited the city to give her backing to a Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Worcester.

Emily Thornberry, shadow secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs, said: “It’s a pleasure to be away from Westminster and the Brexit drama that’s taking place and to come to here and see first hand the support that councillor Lynn Denham has received.

“She is the type of women who lifts colleagues and is always positive.

“Winning a marginal seat as far as I’m concerned is the key to getting Labour back in to power.

“The needs of this city will be considered when it comes to the next draft of our manifesto.

“Issues like unemployment, policing and NHS cuts as well as knife crime all need to be addressed.

“Winning the vote is what matters in politics. It’s not about the taking part.

“It’s time for Worcester to turn a corner and I welcome and I am so proud of the diversity here.

Ms Thornberry talked on the subject of the on-going Brexit issue.

“It’s been two years now since Teresa May called for a ‘snap’ election and I say to that hubris!

“The whole process at the moment is an utter shambles.

“She thought it would destroy Labour but we don’t turn on each other as we’re a strong party and above in-fighting.

“If a deal goes through, the government should opt for a confirmatory vote with the public,” she added.

Ms Thornberry was speaking at the Horizon Community Hall in Midland Road.
