FAMILIES came together at Gheluvelt Park in the city for a St George’s event.

The weather was overcast but warm as people started to arrive.

There was a mixture of young and old and the event pulled a reasonably large crowd.

David Orr, aged 65, chair of the Worcester Lions Club said: “It’s wonderful to come here and show our club’s support to the community.

“A day like this is about bringing everyone together and we want to be at the very heart of the action.”

Activities on offer included cricket, hula hoop and other ball games.

There was also a merry-go-round and bouncy castle.

Sarah Ingram, aged 32, came with her daughter.

“The park is lovely and I live not far away so I’m always here enjoying the views. I was born in Worcester so I remember this park from when I was a kid.

“I can imagine if the weather was poor not many people would turn up.

“It’s a safe place and very pretty and it’s nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of the main roads.”

Freedom leisure provided sporting activities for children to have a go at and Mark Hitchman, aged 28, said: “As a group, we want to encourage children in particular to take up exercise, so we have Quick Cricket, a smaller version than the traditional adult game that can be played indoors. Quick Cricket uses a lightweight bat and ball making it much safer.

“We’ve got a tennis net so we can introduce the basic principles and rules.”

The mayor of Worcester, Jabba Riaz attended the event.
