SCOUTS from across the county have been welcomed at Worcester Cathedral for their annual St George’s Day parade.

A large crowd gathered made up of wellwishers, children and parents on a day that was overcast but warm.

A spokeswoman for Worcester Cathedral said: “We are delighted to host this diverse group of children, young people and adult volunteers who will all renew their promise to do their duty to God during the service.

“The Cathedral is pleased to be connected to the Scouts, who promote the active participation of young people so they can make a positive difference to their communities.”

Proud father, Paul Manning, 45, was there to support his son, Zach, 12.

Mr Manning said: “I’m really proud to be here today.

“There’s so many people who’ve turned out and the weather is not too bad either.

“When I was young, we were out all the time playing and I think it’s nice to get children involved with doing something together, giving back to the community and not playing computer games all day.”

Darren Fletcher, 42, a leader of the 20th Worcester Scouts said: “This is a big event for us as it’s a chance for all the groups to get together and celebrate being part of the movement and our collective involvement with the day.”

The scouts met at Angel Place shortly after 1pm in the city centre to parade the short distance to the cathedral.

The service started at around 2pm, headed by canon Georgina Byrne.

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers renewed their promise at the end of the service, prior to the singing of the National Anthem.

The service was prepared by the 9th Worcester Scouts and the collection will go towards Worcester District Scouts, after the day’s expenses have been deducted.
