THE creation of the new toucan crossing over Croft Road is undoubtedly a Good Thing for the city.

The expansion of the University of Worcester in recent years has led to a great increase in pedestrian footfall between the city centre and the original campus off Henwick Road in St Johns - with most of the foot traffic crossing Croft Road.

When there was merely a zebra crossing in place, this led frequently to lengthy hold-ups - for traffic at some times, and for pedestrians at others.

The completion and activation of the toucan crossing promises an easier time of it for both sets of road users, with the possibility of a much more equitable split of time between drivers and walkers.

If this means people are able to get to where they are going with less stress and in a calmer frame of mind, then all the better for everyone.

There is some question if it could have been provided some years ago, with money emanating from the university.

It would have been good if that had happened, but let us be thankful that we are getting the crossing now.
