Brooklyn in 1898, and two recent émigrés from Russia, Roza and Moishe Gershowitz, have a baby boy they call George.

In Moscow a young composer of promise is struggling with reaction to a first symphony after a disastrous premiere. Sergei Rachmaninov’s fortunes will soon improve and really prosper when he and his family sail into New York in 1917

On May 18, from 7.30pm, Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra celebrates the work of these master composers who, from Russian roots, all made it Big in America.

A spokesman said: "It promises to be a great set of music, from Rachmaninov's Symphony no2, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, with the concert kicked off with Bernstein's Candide Overture. "
