A REMOVAL company enjoyed clearing out an 'incredible' building which has been derelict for six years.

Warren's Removals and Storage ltd went to move furniture from St Mary's Convent School on Battenhall Road. The grade II listed building dates back to 1863 and was a former hospital before becoming a girls school. Warren Leggett from the Worcester removal company went to the site on Thursday with team members Jason Holder and Adam Vickers. Mr Leggett said: "It is an incredible building, the architecture and the history, it's remarkable that it is in Worcester. I think Jason fell in love with it."

"I had never been there until a couple of weeks ago when I went to do the quotes."

The men were moving furniture to a building over the road where it will be stored while the developers carry out the renovations. Warren Leggett said: "When the build is done, they want us to move it back because they want to keep certain things the same, including the furniture, which is brilliant."

Enterprise Retirement Living developers are on the verge of beginning work to transform the building into a multi-million-pound care village for 100 pensioners. All the building's special features will be preserved as part of the re-development.

The site was put on the market in November 2014 for an asking price of £4 million.

When it closed down, the school's management put it down to no longer being viable.

Notable former pupils of the school include Charlotte Jones, a playwright and actress, Helen Lewis, deputy editor of the New Statesman and Rachel Campbell-Johnston, art editor of The Times.
