There was an impressive turnout of runners again for the annual Crowle charity 10k road race and also the children’s fun runs.

A total of 527 runners entered the 10k, 44 up on last year, with elite and fun runners from the three counties and from as far away as Leeds, taking to the roads around the Bowbrook parish.

Almost 170 young runners took part in the one-mile and quarter-mile races around the village playing field.

Proceeds from the event on Sunday, May 12, are likely to top £5,000, which will go towards a wide range of local causes to improve social, educational and sporting facilities in the parish.

Winner of the 10k race was James Rose (aged 40) of Severn Athletics Club, in 35min and 29sec.

Jake Watson from Worcester Athletic Club (23) was second-place man in 35.15 and Matt Fairlamb (40) from Worcester Athletics Club came third with a time of 37.03.

First woman past the post was Cloe Richardson (25) of Birchfield Harriersin 36.16, only 12 seconds off the women’s course record.

Jennifer Cashmore (aged 52), unaffiliated, was overall second in 40.59 and third place woman was Katherine Smith of Pershore Plum Plodders (40) in 42.29.

In the male veteran categories, Lee Hawkes (47) unaffiliated was first 40+ runner in a time of 37.47. First 50+ male veteran was Carl Hatton (50) of Bromsgrove and Redditch Athletics Club in 38.58. And, with an impressive time of 39.50, 67-year-old, Derek Jackson from Black Pear Joggers was the first 60+ veteran.

Winning veteran women in the 10k were Tamsin Bowden (43) of Evesham Vale RC in 44.06 (in the 35+ category); Karen Lewing (45) unaffiliated in 43.48 (in the 45+): and Liz Jarman (55) unaffiliated (in the 50+) in 48.41.

Emma James was the fastest female runner from the local Bowbrook Parish and Alastair Garner was the fastest male runner. The oldest runner taking part in the 10k was Roger Beacham (79) who finished in 1:08:37.

The two fun runs were also a big success. In the under 16s mile the winning boy was Dylan Rolfe (15); second was Henry Churchill (aged 14); and in third was Henry Greaves (10). In the girls’ under 16s mile the winner was Lottie Styler (11). Grace Pettifer (11) was second and in third was Isobelle Tanner (12).

In the quarter mile fun run, the boy’s race was won by Thomas Houghton (7), with George Allchin (8) second, and Rafferty Pearce (8) in third. The girls’ quarter mile was won by Daisy Fitton (9), who came second in last year’s quarter mile, with Emily Gromski (8) in second and Tilly Nichol (7) third.

Caroline Brookes, organiser of the event said: “We are delighted with the turn out for the 10k and fun runs and many thanks to everyone who supported the event. Some 80 residents of Crowle come together each year to make it happen and we are very grateful also for all the sponsors who provide gifts and donations.”
