"Do something you love and that makes you happy.” That was advice given to me many years ago and it has stood me in good stead. Not always, of course, but often.

And I had the chance to do something I love this week at our equality and diversity days across the hospital.

You may know that I am part of the Good Vibrations Choir. This is a group that learns songs in British Sign Language and is made up of Deaf and hearing people. At our rehearsals we have a laugh and practice new songs; and every now and then we get the chance to give performances.

So in the main entrance of Worcester Royal we gave it our best shot. Signing You Raise Me Up, We Are The Champions and What A Wonderful World.

I have to say that people loved us. There was clapping but also it was obvious that people ‘felt’ the songs and there were a number of people in tears. I don’t know if you have ever seen a song signed and not sung.

But it seems to me that it touches parts of the emotions that a singing choir can’t reach. And performing it among this group of friends is one of my greatest joys.

It makes me feel happy; gives me a buzz; and lifts me up. I have to say doing something that also gives evident pleasure to those watching is rewarding. But there is more to it than that even because belonging to a group brings benefits.

Friendship is the obvious one; but understanding each other is another. And the unifying aspect of a community doing something well is massive.

In our group, whether you are deaf, hard of hearing or hearing you are a valuable member of the group. There are no differences here.

So this week, treat yourself to doing something, even one thing, that gives you joy. It can be on your own; in a group; outdoors; indoors or even in your own mind. It’s good for your mental health- and well, you deserve it.
