CLAIMS that someone could be killed or seriously injured by irresponsible cycling in Worcester city centre, have resulted in a surge of comments from readers.

Resident Paul Geraghty said that teenagers recklessly pulling ‘wheelies’ on bicycles in the middle of the road, near pedestrians and cars, is a growing problem that requires action.

Among those to comment was Claire Stevens. She said: “Kids out on bikes great, I’m all for it. Kids being total plonkers in front of cars, weaving across into oncoming traffic, almost falling off in front of a car after a wheelie gone wrong. I absolutely hate.

“And it would be the driver’s fault, they’d be living with guilt for injuries caused even though in many cases it wouldn’t even be their fault.”

But Svend Nielsen had a different view: “I used to ride on my back wheel all the time when I was a kid. It’s not dangerous at all if you’ve got the skill. No different from riding a unicycle really. It’s called being young. People should stop demonising young people.”

Samantha Wood said children should be encouraged to steer away from technology and get out on their bikes, adding: “It’s about time Worcester started thinking about our younger generation. What is there for them to do? How about re-education and building a bike park and trails.

“Encouraging bike safety. Positive actions rather than banning skateboards, bikes and kids.”

Mr Worcester also commented, saying: “There is nothing else for young people to do in Worcester. They should give them somewhere to ride if they have a problem with them doing it.”

G Dog said: “Someone will be killed or seriously injured by one of these idiots, though sadly it’ll be an innocent bystander. They think they have the right to do what the hell they like and get away with it.”

Letterman said: “How did people now in their thirties and older cope when they were young? Back then there were still few facilities and yet we found ways to have fun and enjoy ourselves with resorting to deliberate anti-social behaviour.”

And 27feet added: “Having witnessed kids doing this while cycling the wrong way down the bus lane on the Tything last week - it is an accident waiting to happen.”
