WORCESTER Carnival organisers have announced which chosen charities will benefit from this year’s event - now only a few weeks away.

And children are being encouraged to get involved in a competition especially organised for this year’s event.

Saturday, July 6, is the date for this year’s event, which will include favourites such as the traditional carnival parade and a children’s funfair on Pitchcroft. Organisers are also planning stalls, entertainment on the big stage, and sporting events including netball and football tournaments.

The charity has now announced that benefitting from the day will be Worcester Snoezelen, which provides multi sensory leisure therapy for people with disabilities and additional needs, and West Mercia Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre which provides free support services to victims including a telephone helpline, counselling, training and education both to children and schools.

Meanwhile, schools and youngsters are being encouraged to get involved in the competition.

Carnival team member Angela Derbyshire said: “The theme of the parade is books and we will soon be launching a children’s competition to design a book cover - please encourage your children and school to get involved.

“Design a cover for your favourite book, you can use any medium you like – paint, collage, digital.

"Write a sentence on why it is your favourite book. There are three categories, five to eight-years-old, nine to 12-years-old and 13 plus.

“The closing date is June 21 and a picture of your entry should be sent to schools@worcester-carnival.co.uk.”

The carnival is still appealing for people to get involved, either by entering a float by emailing info@worcester-carnival.co.uk, or to sponsor or offer a prize for the raffle email corporate@worcester-carnival.co.uk.

Interested volunteers needed for the day are asked to email volunteers@worcester-carnival.co.uk.
