AN “organised crime”shoplifting gang's punishment has led to an out pouring of comments from readers.

The gang defended their action at trial at Worcester Magistrates Court by saying the £2000-worth of fragrances shoplifted were to pay for a funeral celebration for a family friend.

All five members accepted two charges each of theft from a shop in relation to the spree on May 1.

The prosecution called for tougher sentences, describing the spree as a “pandemic”, but curfews and compensation payments were imposed instead.
