A DRUNK DJ who caused £2,600 in damage when he jumped up and down on a young woman's new car is now behind bars.

Simon Marriott shook his head as he was handcuffed and led down into the cells to begin his jail sentence. He admitted criminal damage when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The 24-year-old of Worcester Road, Malvern, jumped up and down on the roof and windscreen of Georgia Whitehouse's Vauxhall Corsa on two occasions in the Lido car park in Droitwich on April 12, causing £2,679 worth of damage.

The victim, who was with her friend (Marriott's ex), had to pay an insurance excess of £750. Nicola Ritchie, prosecuting, said Marriott got out of the passenger seat of his friend's car and jumped on the bonnet, windscreen and roof of Miss Whitehouse's car. She asked the defendant why he had done that before he approached her again, 'asking her how much she paid for the car and how could she afford it'.

Miss Whitehouse decided to leave, drove over to her friend and asked her to get in. Ms Ritchie said Marriott then threw a milkshake over the car. "Mr Marriott has gone onto the bonnet again and again gone onto the roof.

"Miss Whitehouse has pulled forward, causing Mr Marriott to fall off the vehicle onto the ground" she said.

Miss Whitehouse called police and Marriott was arrested. Marriott has four previous convictions, including for assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was subject to 18 weeks suspended for 12 months at the time of the offence.

Sarah Brady, for Marriott, said her client had made full and frank admissions to the police in interview and had no intention of causing a huge amount of damage. Mrs Brady said Marriott had 'no ill will' towards the victim and there was 'no reason behind it'.

"He's actually ashamed of causing that damage to what was a fairly new car" she said.

Mrs Brady said Marriott, a DJ, has 'ADHD', suffers from 'low mood' and is 'worried he has some psychotic symptoms' as his birth mother had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

"He's from a very troubled and difficult background and spent a lot of time in care" she told the bench.

Mrs Brady said Marriott was 'exceptionally drunk that day' and would sometimes drink rum early in the morning but had self-referred to Swanswell She also told magistrates: "A curfew may affect his DJing which tends to be late but that is something he would have to accept if there's an order of the court."

The chairman asked Mrs Brady how he afforded the rum and she replied: "I can only imagine it's very cheap rum."

Chairman of the bench Antony Fussey said: "The criminal damage matter we regard as a serious one. It was a young lady in her car and and you repeatedly jumped on it and caused significant damage. It wasn't just a one off.

"You went back twice and did it. We feel that crosses the custody threshold."

Magistrates sentenced him to 22 weeks in prison (six for the criminal damage and 16 of the 18 from the original suspended sentence to be served consecutively).

Marriott was also ordered to pay £750 in compensation to Miss Whitehouse, who attended court, to cover the cost of her insurance excess.
