A TEENAGER who was dramatically airlifted off a road bridge after being struck by a car is now back at home.

Ryan Robins, 13, was rushed to hospital on May 26 with a fractured skull and bruising on the brain, after the collision just off Holt Fleet Bridge.

His dad Brian described him as "one lucky lad" after his son was released from intensive care and into a regular ward at Birmingham Children's Hospital just a couple of days later.

The youth was then allowed to go home on Monday evening, though doctors have warned him off sport for a couple of years while he recovers.

"They have said he can't do anything that will move his head too much, which includes sports, for two years," said Mr Robins.

Ryan's bedroom has been moved downstairs at the family home in Rowley Regis and he is currently unable to go to school.

"I’m waiting for confirmation from the hospital but he will be probably off school until next term, after the summer," said Mr Robins.

"His friends have to come and see him because he can't leave the house."

As well as the hairline fracture to the skull and bruising to the brain, Ryan has a right shoulder fracture and lots of other cuts and bruises.

Last week, doctors also found he had a fractured calf bone.

With "a lot of appointments" coming up at the doctors and the hospital in the near future, Mr Robins said his son "has just got to get on with it".

"He is totally with you now, but some times it takes him a few seconds to respond if you speak to him, but that’s to be expected," continued Mr Robins.

Ryan's mum Michelle stayed with him each night during his stay in hospital, while Mr Robins visited him most days.

"He was very sleepy until Tuesday [May 28] and that's when they found the broken fibula, then on Saturday [June 1] he was more himself."

Mr Robins said Ryan then became more restless and kept asking when he could go home, which doctors said was a good sign.

At the time of the incident, Ryan, his parents, and sister Sarah-Lou, were staying at their caravan at Holt Fleet Farm Caravan Park.

Police put out an appeal for dashcam footage of the incident involving a maroon Mini Cooper on the A4133 at around 4.45pm. Call 101 and quote incident 0493S.
