COMMUNITY members will come together to support a group of disabled and elderly people to reach the summit of the Worcestershire Beacon.

An off-road capable vehicle will be on hand for a day to act as a shuttle service.

The idea came from the Rotary Club of Malvern, which has organised this year’s event and the organisation’s motto is “service above self” .

Spokesman Michael Cook, 58, said: “In the past, we have taken many residents from local nursing homes to the top of the Malverns.

“It’s certainly emotional and I’ve seen tears being shed - memories come back to them from their younger days.”

Around 15 people will be taken in small groups to the summit, some 1,394 ft in height, by a volunteer and car provided by the Land Rover Experience Eastnor.

“On a personal level, it’s very satisfying to be part of making this happen and it brings a smile to the members too - a truly joyous time,” added Mr Cook.

The base station will be at the Cafe H20 on Walwyn Road, which will provide refreshments and a place to rest.

Spokeswoman for Cafe H20, Kate Harding, 49, said: “ It’s great to be involved and our cafe supports many disabled people - we have 16 people with disabilities working in the cafe - so we care passionately about inclusion.

“We do have two all-terrain personal buggies on site but the cars are able to get a person to the top who are not able to use a buggy.

“I think everyone should be able to access the beautiful Malverns.”

Members of the Rotary Club of Malvern will also be on hand to offer assistance.

Beck Baker, community and conservation officer for the Malvern Hills trust, said “We’re really pleased to be working with the Malvern Hills Rotary Club and other partners on this exciting project to improve access to the Hills.

“It’s a great opportunity for those less able to experience and enjoy this spectacular and iconic landscape.”

The event will take place on Tuesday June 11, between 9:30am to 3:30pm however it is fully booked.

There are places on the next event scheduled to take place on as yet unspecified day in August.
