I CAN’T wait until July 22 (although it might be a day earlier or later). I am going to take a day off work (yes, I get days off from time to time) and meet two inspirational men when they come to Worcestershire.

Their names are Danny and Mark, they are Deaf, and they are doing something amazing.

They started at John O’Groats and are heading down to Land’s End over a period of three months – a journey of some 874 miles by road, but typically 1,200 miles on foot.

This is a romantic idea, and appeals to my nomadic spirit, but already they have had to endure the torrential downpours of June, exhaustion and huge blisters.

And each day they post video blogs on their Facebook page recounting their experience, meeting friends from the Deaf community and wider society, and showing the beautiful scenery around them. In fact you can see where they are in real time on Google maps and walk ‘virtually’ with them.

So why take on this mammoth expedition? They are doing it because they care passionately about the mental health problems faced by Deaf people.

So, did you know that deaf people are twice as likely to experience mental health problems than hearing people (and this is a conservative estimate)?

Did you know that there is a scarcity of BSL counsellors so that patients’ needs can’t be met in their own language?

Did you know that Deaf people have problems accessing counselling and are usually referred inappropriately to hearing professionals?

Did you know that, in all probability, the incidence of suicide for deaf people s higher than that of the hearing world?

Well, you do now! Danny and Mark (not forgetting Chris their co-driver) are aiming to raise £10,000 for two organisations, Deaf4Deaf and SignHealth to support their work giving Deaf people the same access to services like counselling in BSL, as you or I.

So when they come to Worcester, I will be there. Cheering them on; applauding their effort; and supporting their cause, and walking a mile or two if they will have me.

You can find them easily on the internet if you want to give to this cause. But as important as the money is, these heroic men are raising awareness for the mental health needs of the Deaf.
