MORE than 3,000 women, men and children gathered at a packed Worcester Racecourse over the weekend to boost funds for a cancer charity.

The racecourse was covered in a sea of pink as thousands of people wore jazzy outfits as they took part in this year’s spectacular Race for Life events.

The events throughout the weekend raised around £143,000 for Cancer Research UK, which will contribute towards research into all the 200 forms of cancer.

Kimberley Degville, event manager said: “We’ve had a fabulous weekend of events in Worcester with over 3,000 people really rocking the pink look to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

“Reading the signs on people’s backs, celebrating cancer survivors and in memory of friends and relatives, is always an emotional experience.”

The weekend included a muddy obstacle course on Saturday, which left partakers covered in mud after scrambling over equipment and crawling through mud pits.

This was followed by a 5K and a 10K run on Sunday, which began at 10am.

Many of the people taking part in the races had stories to share about their personal experiences with cancer.

Sarah Tudge, who lost her brother to cancer, ran the 10K with her daughter Amy, her mother-in-law Valentine and their dog Nala.

She said: “We have three generations and a dog taking part. Unfortunately, my brother passed away to cancer. My mother-in-law also had cancer; she is a survivor.”

Linda Deasy said: “I’m running for my friends and family who are battling cancer.”

Family, friends and supporters cheered and enjoyed the atmosphere at Pitchcroft in Grand Stand Road.
