AN ICE CREAM-loving councillor has challenged the county's producers to find a unique Worcestershire flavour to celebrate as part of a proposed festival.

Councillor Richard Udall, who wants to see an ice cream extravaganza take place along the city's riverside, has put forward Worcestershire Sauce, Black Pear, asparagus and Worcester Pearmain as potential heavy hitting flavours to sit on top of a county-commemorating cone.

He said: "I am a huge ice cream fan and I have been asking for a festival in the city for as long as I can remember.

"Other parts of the country have ice cream festivals and they always bring a lot of tourists into the area and I am positive it will do the same for Worcester.

"There are a number of really great ice cream producers in the county such as Bennetts and Churchfields in Droitwich and many more all around Worcestershire and some further slightly further afield that would all be interested.

"We really need to celebrate this local product and help support local businesses.

"More than anything it would bring people to the city but it would also mean economic development for the ice cream producers.

"The dairy industry has been in crisis for a number of years so we need to help in whatever way we can.

"The city's riverside would be the perfect place for the festival but we need to test it out first.

"We need to see who would be interested and what money would be available and whether it would all be possible.

"However, I can't do this all on my own. We really need the backing and some kind of support from a local authority whether that would be the city or the county council.

"There's a lot of ifs and buts but hopefully the report that will be prepared will set the wheels in motion."
