A SCHIZOPHRENIC man could not remember threatening to rape a woman and chasing a man down a street.

During the first incident, the victim Clive Griffiths was walking along the river in Worcester when he saw Alan Mariano, 40 who shouted and swore at him.

Nicola Ritchie, prosecuting said on a second occasion: “He was walking down London Road. He recognised the same male walking towards him in his general direction. He started swearing. Mr Griffiths said later ‘I was in fear that he was going to attack me.’ He kept saying ‘If you come over here, I’m going to get you.’”

The court heard that Mariano then chased Mr Griffiths down the road.

A statement from Mr Griffiths read: “I am anxious to go into the city centre just in case I bump into him again.”

The next incident happened when a woman was walking around Angel Place and Mariano said to her: “You work for the police; I’m going to rape you.”

Miss Ritchie said: “(She) also states that she is in fear of him.”

Defending, Judith Kenney said Mariano of Kilbury Drive, Worcester has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“He has an injection every four weeks. When he was interviewed, the police were not convinced he’d had his injection. The situation is when he’s had an injection, he is well and fit, and when he’s getting close to having it, he is not well.”

“Today he is very well, and he is very upset about the matter. He genuinely doesn’t recall that behaviour. He genuinely doesn’t recall the incident.”

Miss Kenney told Worcester Magistrates Court that doctors had considered Mariano could have the injection more regularly.

Magistrate Keith Stokes-Smith said: “Due to your illness I’m not sure which one of you I am talking to.

“You deny these offences but presumably you did commit them as a different person. Our main concern is the public’s safety as well as you. We are concerned about the people who fear seeing you in public.”

Mariano was given a 24-month mental health order, 30 rehabilitation requirement days and fines of £460. There are also restraining orders preventing him from contacting or going near the two victims for two years.

The case was heard on Thursday July 25.
