A MALVERN-based building contractor has carried out a good deed for the local foodbank, with staff all contributing to their collection efforts.

Staff at Speller Metcalfe have rallied together to collect food and supplies to donate to Malvern Hills Foodbank, based on Spring Lane.

Donation points were set up at each of the family-owned construction firm’s regional offices in Malvern, Gloucester and Wolverhampton following an urgent call for donations needed to tide struggling families over during the school summer holidays.

Speller Metcalfe PR officer, Katy Gilbert said: “We heard on the radio that Worcestershire foodbanks were in dire need of supplies at this time of year and wanted to do our bit to help to help those families who usually rely on free school meals.

“The response from our teams has been fantastic.

Lots of people have bought in items from home, many have specifically gone out to buy items on the foodbank’s shortages list and others have kindly donated money with which we have bought supplies.

"It is brilliant to know that the items donated will go a long way in supporting people in our local community who find them themselves in difficult circumstances.

“In addition to food we have also had many donations of nappies, washing up liquid, razors and other toiletries which people may not always think to donate but are always needed.

“We would urge all local businesses to follow suit - we all have a real opportunity and responsibility to give back to our local communities and setting up a foodbank collection point in the workplace is a really simple and effective way of doing so and one that staff seem to really get on board with.”

Chairman of Malvern Hills Foodbank, Peter Buchanan said: “Owing to increased demand, this is the first year that the need for our services has been greater than the donations we have received.

"We are delighted that the generous people at Speller Metcalfe have chosen to support us, along with many other organisations in the Malvern are, who, without their support we would be struggling to meet the needs of all those referred to us."
