Six employees from npower’s Worcester office have cycled, hiked and paddled over 100km along an ancient Roman monument for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Starting from Newcastle and finishing in Carlisle, the team cycled the first 40km to Chollerford, followed by an 18km trek along Hadrian’s wall with 40 other npower employees from across the UK to complete day one to mark the company's 15 year partnership with the charity.

During day two, the group trekked a further 12km along the 1,892-year-old boundary wall and reached the highest point on the journey, Whinshields Crags. After a grueling 30km cycle to Low Crosby, the team finally crossed the finishing line after a tough paddle into Carlisle along the River Eden.

Senior auditor, Carl Mason, based at the site at Oak House said: “From the get-go it was tough. The hardest thing was the cycling against the wind on long stretches of undulating open roads. By the end of the first day, I could barely put one foot in front of the other. When I woke the next morning I was really sore – we then had more to hike, another cycle plus a paddle to finish it all off! Despite all the pain, it was humbling to know that we were doing this for a great cause and to remember my colleague Mike who sadly lost his battle with cancer. We’re all so proud of our partnership with Macmillan and what we’ve all achieved together during the past 15 years.”

Carl and his team from Worcester contributed nearly £1,800 to the overall £14,000 raised for this challenge, which npower have matched pound for pound, taking the total raised to £28,000. The value of the 15 year Macmillan partnership has now hit the £15m milestone.

Heather Tyrer, community manager at npower said: “Macmillan means a lot to the people of npower, and the fact that we’ve already hit this incredible amount for this fantastic charity is testament to that.”

Catriona Munn, Senior Partnership Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support said: “Reaching 15 years for any charity partnership is fantastic and we are so grateful to all the enthusiastic npower employees who hike, run, bake and row for Macmillan year after year.

“The number of people living with cancer in the UK is rising and so we greatly appreciate the continued dedication of employees at npower. The money raised will allow Macmillan to be right there for people living with cancer.
