A bid for regenerating the northern part of Worcester city centre was given £150,000 to develop detailed project proposal - and has made it through to the next stage of the Future High Streets Fund.

The authority is leading the joint bid and has revealed that The Cross up to Foregate Street Railway Station, including Broad Street, Angel Place, Trinity Passage and Queen Street, would be rejuvenated.

The area currently has a high proportion of empty shops, a poor quality street environment and is a known area for anti-social behaviour.

The city council says the vision is to create a diverse leisure, residential and cultural offer with new jobs being created and fresh life breathed back into historic buildings.

Among those that supported the original bid were Worcestershire County Council, Worcestershire LEP, Crowngate Shopping Centre owners Crown Estate, the University of Worcester and Worcester BID.

The proposals for the funding will be submitted to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government by April 30, 2020.

Phoebe Dawson, Worcester BID chief executive, said: “BID businesses were consulted during first-round of Future High Street Fund applications so there is understandably a real buzz in our city centre as word of the announcement spreads.”

Gary Woodman, Worcestershire LEP chief executive, added: “We have seen the success of investment in the Cathedral Plaza project, which has been good for the city.

“We have had the recent Arches announcement too - things are heading in a positive direction.”
