WORCESTER residents are being warned that the next stage of the £100million scheme to dual of one of the county’s busiest roads could being some traffic disruption.

Work started on the fourth stage of the project to fully dual the Southern Link Road between Junction 7 of the M5 and Powick Roundabout, in March.

The fourth and final part of the scheme will see dualling complete between the Ketch and Powick roundabout and includes construction of a new Carrington bridge and Powick viaduct.

The site offices and main compound have been established off the Powick roundabout, temporary sheet piling works are complete and foundation works are progressing well for both the new bridge and the Powick Viaduct.

To complete the next phase of works, Worcestershire County Council says it will be necessary to have a limited number of lane restrictions on both the Powick and Ketch Roundabouts, and there will be some overnight closures and restrictions on the approaches to them.

This is to provide working space to increase capacity on the approaches, circulatory carriageway and exits, to install new street lighting, upgrade pedestrian and cycle crossings and to tie into Temeside Way and the new carriageway.

For five nights from Monday, September 30, Temeside Way will be fully closed in both directions overnight, 9pm until 5.30am, and after that Temeside Way will be down to two lanes on the approach to Powick Roundabout for the duration of this phase of work.

During the overnight closures a diversion will be signposted via Bath Road/Bromwich Road.

Meanwhile, in early October following the Temeside closures, the A38 will be fully closed overnight in both directions between the Ketch and Timberdine Roundabouts for up to 10 nights, between 9pm and 5.30am. During these overnight closures, a diversion will be signposted via A4440/London Road.

After the closures, the southbound lanes will be on a temporary new alignment for 12 weeks.

Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for economy and infrastructure, Councillor Ken Pollock, said: “The amount of progress already made on this essential scheme to dual the final part of the SLR is great to see and the pace of work is set to continue.

"Whilst we are determined to minimise any impact on traffic during construction, the next phase will need some traffic management and lane restrictions.

"Please do bear with us whilst we complete these works as quickly and safely as we can and please be aware that there will be a number of road layout changes over the coming months.”
