SIR – I do not suppose I am alone in feeling disgust and despair hearing that Bulgarian football supporters had been booing, hooting, monkey chanting and gesticulating with the Nazi salute when players “of colour” scored a goal for England.
Uefa’s response was quite inadequate.
As racist abuse continued in the second half the match ought to have been abandoned.
Playing to the end allows the Bulgarian manager to pretend he was unaware of it and some Bulgarian journalists complained it was an overreaction.
Match officials using Uefa’s three-step protocol was praised as a step forward but that achieved little.
We have experienced two major world wars and seem to have learned nothing.
