INSPECTORS from Worcestershire Regulatory Services have visited a city Chinese takeaway after a couple claim they found what appears to be a human tooth in their curry.

Stephanie McDonough and David Burrows reported Newtown Cantonese Takeaway after finding a large molar tooth in a pork curry last Friday.

A city council spokesman confirmed yesterday WRS officers visited the business on Monday and interviewed staff, adding, the “investigation is ongoing”.

A woman who claims to be the manager of the takeaway, which currently has a four-star food hygiene rating, said inspectors “took everything out” of the kitchen during their visit.

She said she had been told a report would be completed within two weeks, but until then she did not want to comment on the matter. She would not give her name.

Ms McDonough, who had called the business to complain on Friday night, previously told the Worcester News the manager had allegedly tried to suggest it was actually a piece of gristle or bone, despite having apparently been sent photos.

Mr Burrows, 38, was a few mouthfuls into his pork curry before suddenly spitting something out onto his plate, his partner said.

“We thought it was a bone at first, but it’s definitely a tooth,” said Ms McDonough, 29, of Warndon. “We both checked it wasn’t any of ours.”

Referring to the manager, she added: “She was trying to come up with all different things that it could have been. It was a tooth.”

The couple were apparently reimbursed the £6.30 cost of the affected curry but not the rest of the £17.70 bill.

Ms McDonough said the biggest issue for her is the contamination risk, as the tooth did not appear to be fresh, and she believes any blood or bacteria could have been marinated into other people’s meals. They reported it to the Food Standards Agency’s National Food Crime Unit and Environmental Health.

The takeaway was previously inspected on October 31, 2018 when the report said the officer had “confidence that standards will be maintained in future”.
