Here are the details of all those graduating from the University of Worcester today.

Student - Pat Brown

Student cricketer Pat Brown will be on the other side of the world as his fellow Business Management students celebrate graduation today.

But, as he says, he has the best reason for not being there, after being selected for the England Cricket squad for the Twenty20 five-match series in New Zealand, which started on Friday (November 1).

For the past three years, Pat has combined elite sport with his academic studies, and his impressive form in recent seasons has now led to his first call up to the national side.

“I think I’ve probably got as good an excuse as anyone for not being at graduation,” said the 21-year-old.

“It’s definitely a weight off my shoulders to have that degree. It’s obviously nice knowing that whatever happens in cricket I’ve got a back-up plan already in place. I’d love to use my degree in the future after cricket, to go into business and explore that walk of life.”

Pat was awarded a scholarship through the University’s partnership with Worcestershire County Cricket Club, which allowed him to combine playing for the County side, Worcestershire Rapids, with a degree.

He added: “I loved my time at the University of Worcester. It progressed me as a person, but it’s also really helped me develop as a cricketer.”

Pat met his fellow England players for the first time at the airport when they flew out and has been in training in New Zealand over the past two weeks in preparation for the Series. He said receiving kit with his name on the back had brought it home to him what he had achieved.

“It’s obviously a lovely feeling and something I’ve worked very hard for and something that I’m not going to give up easily. I feel very privileged,” he added.

Student - Beth Crumpton

A national cycling champion will graduate from the University of Worcester today.

Beth Crumpton will receive her Sport Business Management degree, which she completed alongside training and competing in Cyclo-cross.

The 25-year-old, from Redditch, said: “It’s amazing. I never thought I would go to university so to be graduating with a 2:1 is better than I could imagine. I feel really proud to have accomplished graduating alongside my cycling aspirations.”

Cyclo-cross involves, for women, a minimum 40-minute race, with a 6-9 minute lap incorporating a variety of surfaces, such as grass, wooded sections, road, sand, and challenges such as corners, steps, descents, hills and planks.

Beth represented England at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, finishing ninth, and won the Cyclo-Cross National Trophy in the 2018/19 season, retaining her title from the previous year. She is ranked in the top 50 Cyclo-cross cyclists in the world. In February she competed for Great Britain in the Elite Cyclo-Cross World Championships in Denmark.

Beth was talent spotted by British Cycling at 18 and progressed through their Olympic pathways onto the full-time Olympic Academy Programme.

She was on the University’s sports scholarship programme, giving her financial and academic support, as well as access to specialist lifestyle advice. She said that the financial support had helped her to travel to Europe where most of the racing is based. Many of her competitors are full-time athletes.

“It was helpful to have people support me who understood the demands of sport and could advise me,” she said. “The lecturers in the sport department were so lovely and understanding when it came to juggling all my cycling alongside assignments. Help was there whenever it was needed.”

Beth hopes to go on to a career in performance and elite sport, programme managing or organising big sporting events.

Student - Charlotte Wright

A Group Scout Leader graduates from the University of Worcester today with a First Class Honours in Geography.

Charlotte Wright, from Smethwick, said she felt incredibly proud to be graduating with top marks.

“Being the first person in my family to go to university, I am beyond proud and excited to have completed my degree, and to get a First is the icing on the cake,” said the 21-year-old.

Alongside studying for her degree, Charlotte achieved a Gold Worcester Award, recognising her extracurricular activities, including her role within the Scouts.

“I am proud of this extra achievement, as it recognises the additional activities I do as well as studying,” she said.

“During my time at university, my role changed from Cub Scout Leader (running the section for children aged 8-10) to Group Scout Leader,” she said. “In this role it is my responsibility to manage the 16 adults working within my group, ultimately ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the 60 young people that they work with. In addition to my management role, I also regularly help to plan and attend the weekly meetings, trips and camps.”

Since completing her degree, Charlotte has been undertaking teacher training through the Schools Direct programme with the hope of becoming a Geography teacher.

“Since I was young, my plan was always to be a teacher and after completing two work placements during my degree, I am now taking the next steps on my journey,” she said.

Charlotte came to Worcester through Clearing. “I am so glad that I went to Worcester as I feel it was the perfect uni for me,” she said. “I loved the small friendly department, where all the lecturers knew me by name, the thoughtful assignments, and of course, the beautiful scenery surrounding the campus.”

Fellowship – Casey Bailey

Poet, teacher, and spoken word performer Casey Bailey will become a Fellow of the University of Worcester today.

As well as a poet and spoken word performer, Casey is the Assistant Head Teacher at Great Wyrley Academy in Walsall. His work across these many spheres is unified by his deep commitment to reducing inequality, and his drive to ensure young people from disadvantaged backgrounds have the opportunity to discover their own rich potential.

Born and raised in Nechells in Birmingham, Casey was determined to avoid the troubles that had befallen many of his peers. Embracing the emancipatory power of education, he studied for his A-Levels, before moving on to a degree and Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Worcester, and finally a Masters in Educational Leadership at Birmingham City University.

As a poet and performer, Casey’s work has been featured on BBC television and radio, as well as on stages across the country. His first short poetry collection, Waiting At Bloomsbury Park, was published by Big White Shed in 2017, and his debut full collection, Adjusted, was published last year by Verve Poetry Press.

Casey has worked tirelessly to tackle disadvantage with a number of charities and community groups in and around Birmingham, including Continental Star FC, a community football club in Perry Barr.

Casey’s contribution as a dedicated member of his local community was recognised last year, when he was named by the Birmingham Mail on their 30 Under 30 list of the most influential young people in the City.
