Having spotted my first Christmas light bedecked house, I think that the party season is officially open! For many of us, the coming weeks may see our social calendars morph into something spectacular, but with that comes the inevitable seasonal spending.

The most effective way to save money, as always, is to plan ahead.

WHAT TO WEAR?

1. Check your existing wardrobe and accessorise to give it a brand new look.

2. Borrow something from a friend. It will look totally different on you.

3. Hit the charity shops, dress agencies and online for great savings. Even if you just land a scarf or piece of some costume jewellery, this may be all you need to create the look you’re after.

4. If something new is the only thing that will do, choose separates: black trousers and plain tops are easily dressed up or down.

5. Wear it more than once. If you’re seeing a different crowd to last week why not wear the same outfit? Nobody will know.

WHERE TO GO?

1. If you’re heading out to a local club or bar, check their website before you go, as advance tickets are often cheaper, even if you buy on the day.

2. Don’t forget the voucher sites. Hundreds of events and venues are competing for your cash and offer hefty discounts to get you through their doors.

ALTERNATIVE THINKING

1. Swap the usual spendy taxi and offer to be the designated driver in exchange for a free entry ticket or meal.

2. If your budget just won’t stretch to a night on the town try a night in.

Sharing the financial load with friends can work well. Create a kitty or ask each to bring food or drink. Create your own themed playlist and that’s just and you’re good to go!
