A GRAN who ended up in hospital for five weeks after her scooter got stuck due to the selfish parking of a driver says she has been “to hell and back.”

Mary Laird, aged 86, found herself trapped after she tried to squeeze her scooter past a car that was blocking the dropped kerb, and fell and broke her hip as she struggled to free the scooter.

Mrs Laird said: “I decided to try the free the scooter, I put it into reverse and it jolted and it knocked me over and threw me into the road.

“I was lying in the road in pain for half an hour, and it was pouring with rain. I was taken to hospital, and had the hip operation, and only came home on Sunday (after five weeks).

“The driver would not have thought about the consequences of being selfish.

“I missed my niece’s 25th wedding anniversary as I was in hospital - that was very disappointing.”

Mrs Laird said she always looked for a dropped kerb as a few years ago she drove off one in a scooter, and suffered whiplash.

And at the exact spot of her fall in The Avenue, just a few minutes from her home, she had previously left notes on cars to tell people not to park there.

Mrs Laird said: “The dropped kerb in that road needs to be moved from there, to a better position.

“And the council need to make sure dropped kerbs are more prominent to drivers.”

Mrs Laird added after the Worcester News first reported the story in October there were a number of messages of support.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: “We would be very happy to meet Mrs Laird to discuss her thoughts on this matter and to see if we can help in anyway. “

In October Worcestershire County Councillor Alan Amos, cabinet member with responsibility for highways, also said: “We would always encourage drivers to park responsibly and with thought and consideration for everyone using the pathways.”
