IF you read my column a few weeks ago you will know that I had a fairly tortuous journey back from Glasgow. While at the airport a flight disembarked from sunnier climes and the returning holidaymakers came through the arrivals gate festooned with trinkets and souvenirs from their trip, including the rather predictable sombreros and stuffed donkeys.

But what struck my imagination was whether, amongst all the memories purchased from the local bazaar, any of them would become future collectables.

The four models pictured below are of painted alabaster and would have been souvenirs from a trip to India at the end of the 19th century.

I would have no idea how much they would have originally cost but at auction today they should realise somewhere between £150 and £250. I know that those of you who watch Flog It! will be aware that Troika is very collectable at the moment and that in the late 1960s and early 70s, it was a must-buy souvenir for all those visiting Cornwall.

The bottom line is that whatever you choose to take home as a holiday memento always try and buy a quality lot that also fulfils the criterion of reminding you of a great holiday. I can't see the sombrero and donkey appearing on Flog It! in 50 years time, but then again it's a funny old world!
