A COUNCILLOR is calling for a cycle barrier to be placed on a path after the steps were damaged by ‘lazy’ cyclists.

The steps in question lead up from Tofdale Green to a path that comes from Woodgreen Drive in Warndon.

City and county councillor Andy Roberts, who represents Warndon, said: “Repeated damage to the steps off the path from Woodgreen Drive is (apparently) caused by cyclists.

“A cycle barrier is being considered.

“I can understand cyclists using the route as a short cut but when the treads are damaged, they become dangerous for walkers.

“Cyclists should have the decency to go round the steps and not be lazy.

“The edge of the steps are broken so someone can trip up or down these steps.”

Cllr Roberts says the steps have been repaired at least twice already.

He said: “In desperation we need to provide a barrier to stop cyclists from going down the steps which is causing damage.

“It’s expensive to keep replacing. The steps are not for people on wheels.

“Sounds like a sledgehammer to crack a nut but every repair is expensive and until they’re done it’s a risk to walkers."

Cllr Roberts added: “It’s of a safety concern.

"What we need to know is what the damage is caused by.”

Cllr Roberts said residents who live near the area in Worcester have voiced their concerns of the safety about the damaged steps.

The money that will be spent on the cycle barrier was originally going to be used on improving the environment and promoting residents to exercise outdoors.

He said: “The money was going to be used on enhancing the environment and encouraging more people to go on outdoor walks.

“My desire is to help the network for people walking through Warndon and to make people healthier.

“It’s disappointing because we will have to use these funds on the barrier instead which will have a negative impact."

Councillor Alan Amons, cabinet member with responsibility for Highways at Worcestershire County Council, said: “We will look at the area to inspect any damage and liaise with Councillor Roberts regarding options for these steps in the future.”
