WE need more people to set up projects in their community to target anti-social behaviour in Worcester.

The Worcester News reported about a new boxing class that will be introduced to youngsters in Warndon between the ages of eight and 16.

To combat anti-social behaviour and to get kids off the streets, Worcester boxing coach Shawn Lacroix will be hosting self-defence lessons, with the support from Worcester Community Trust (WCT) and West Mercia Police.

It was inspiring to hear that Shawn will be spending his Friday evenings giving his time to young people and teaching them how to box.

This project will benefit everyone – from youngsters, to their families, residents, the police, charities and organisations.

It will not only support the police by steering away crime, but it will also provide teens with something to do on an evening. Youngsters will be able to explore and learn new skills which they wouldn’t usually have been given such an opportunity.

This class could cause a debate and some could suggest that boxing lessons will encourage youngsters to throw punches.

As Worcester News reader, Teme Player, has said: “So, let's get this straight. You can't head a football, but you can meet at a club to bash each other’s brains out. More sensible stuff from Campion.”

However, the idea of the class is to teach discipline, respect and educate individuals on the impact on what anti-social behaviour can do in the community.

Many readers are backing the project and have praised Shawn for his efforts.

Lord Snotty said: “Well done to Shawn, there's to many of these 'personal trainers' out there who haven’t got an idea and just do it for the money. This man is giving his free time for the community and doing good. Well done again.”

Zoe Adams said: “Fair play to these people giving up their own time to try and improve life for others, we need more people like this.”

As well as tackling the rise in anti-social behaviour in our city, these sessions will also contribute to other factors such as getting youngsters to socialise, get fit, meet new people and teach them to defend themselves. In order for this pilot to continue, young people must take advantage of these sessions and encourage others to join.

Every Friday at 7.30pm, the boxing lesson will take place at Warndon Youth and Community Centre, in Shap Drive.
