A DRINK driver became aggressive and bit two police officers.

Katie Symmonds, 32 pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker, drink driving and being drunk in charge of a child at Worcester Magistrates court.

Prosecuting on January 30, Rhiannon Lucas said: "On the night in question officers were driving a marked police vehicle when the defendant's vehicle was heading towards it and veered over the central white line into their carriageway."

Miss Lucas said the officers stopped the car and "formed the opinion the defendant was drunk" before requesting a breath test.

"They noticed she had two young children in the car. She was taken out of the vehicle and told the children needed to be collected. She then became aggressive and obstructive. She was screaming at them and verbally abusing the officers. They tried to get her into the police vehicle but she refused to co-operate. They then took her into a slightly larger vehicle and took her to the police station."

The court heard that Symmonds of Lawnspool Drive, Kempsey was making threats of self-harm so officers put her in protective clothing and she was kicking out at them.

"As they were taking her to the cells to get changed, she fell to the floor. They tried to restrain her but as she was kicking her foot hit the officers shin. An officer approached her to try and get her back up and she bit his hand. She then turned to the right and bit the hand of the second officer" Miss Lucas said.

When a breath test was carried out on Symmonds, 83 microgrammes of alcohol was found in 100 millilitres of breath placing her over the legal limit.

Defending, Gerry Vahey said: "She accepts she was drunk. In relation to the assault she said she was reacting to the way she was being treated. She doesn't know why she chose to bite the officers."

"She does not have any previous convictions. She pleaded guilty straight away."

Mr Vahey said he felt a pre-sentencing report should be prepared before the magistrates’ sentence Symmonds, due to her mental health issues.

The case was adjourned until February 20. Symmonds was granted conditional bail until then and given an interim disqualification from driving.
