THE world’s tallest basketball player paid a visit to a primary school to deliver a talk to the students about his journey and challenges within the sport.

Perry Wood Primary Nursery School welcomed Paul Sturgess, who is famous for holding a Guinness World record as the ‘tallest professional basketball player in the world’.

Standing tall at 7ft 8in, Paul has also been recognised as ‘Britain’s tallest man’.

The day provided an opportunity for the pupils at Perry Wood to meet him in person, and learn exciting and impressive basketball skills, directly from the professional himself.

Suzanne Beston, headteacher, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide this experience for our pupils. Our children have learnt so much today and are truly inspired.

“At Perry Wood we have high aspirations and pride ourselves on identifying how each of our children are unique.

“We provide opportunities to help them develop and thrive in their unique skills and talents, so Paul was a perfect visitor to support and further promote our ethos. We cannot thank him enough for today.”

To start the day off on January 27, pupils and staff enjoyed an informative assembly lead by Paul, where he spoke of his professional career in basketball and how his uniqueness allowed him to thrive within this sport and become a proud and international player for the Harlem Globe Trotters.

The Harlem Globetrotters are an American exhibition basketball team. They combine athleticism, theatre, and comedy in their style of play.

Paul also shared with the school how challenges such as discrimination from others helped to make him a stronger person.

Later in the day, pupils took part in workshops where they learnt and developed key basketball skills such as dribbling, passing and teamwork.

Perry Wood Primary and Nursery School is a member of The Griffin Schools Trust and is located in Ronkswood, Worcester.
