The VE Day garden has been designed by Worcester-based designer Martyn Wilson.

Mr Wilson is an award-winning garden designer based in Worcester whose grandfather was involved in D-Day and the battle for Normandy.

He said: “I’ve heard so many first hand tales of the war from my family and I am extremely honoured to be able to bring a VE Day commemorative garden to the RHS Malvern Spring Festival.”

The four-day festival, which runs from May 7 to 10, will hold a special ‘Music at Malvern’ outdoor concert series for the first time ever, featuring performances by Lesley Garrett, the English Symphony Orchestra and a Garden Party with BBC Radio 2’s Jo Whiley.

This year also sees the show celebrate its 35th anniversary, with more than 100,000 visitors annually.

The garden to celebrate Second World War spy Violette Szabo has been designed by Jane Scott Moncrieff. Echoing a Normandy farmhouse and its surroundings, the planting features spring flowering shrubs among herbaceous perennials.

Violette was 23 when she was tortured and executed by the Nazis while spying for the Special Operations Executive in France. Head of shows at Three Counties Showground, Diana Walton, said it’s a truly fitting garden for the occasion.

She said: “The story of Violette Szabó is one we’ve all been touched by here at Malvern. Her courageousness and heroism should never be forgotten and we’re honoured that Jane has chosen RHS Malvern Spring Festival as the place to create this garden, especially during such a poignant time when we’ll all be thinking of those who gave their lives during World War Two.”
