A PROUD mother has revealed how her daughter tried to stop a man from jumping into the river in Worcester.

Bex Evans said her daughter Kim Evans tried to stop the man, who was eventually pulled from the water and taken to hospital, on Wednesday.

She posted on Facebook: “Well, tonight I had a call from my daughter at 1am, she was driving home from a band night, and on her way over the main river bridge. She saw a man stripping down to his boxers getting ready to jump.

“She immediately called the police, but had to stop him going over. He was a large man (the police said about 6ft 4in and 20st) so she struggled but managed to get him back.

“With the police now on the way, he decided to go down towards Browns where she followed. Again she had to try to stop him going over the railings, she was holding him around his waist and begging him in tears not to do it.

“She held him for as long as she could, but couldn’t stop him and he rolled over the bars and went in. “She was distraught as it is so cold tonight, so the water must have been freezing, she said she’d never seen someone carried off so quickly by the current.

“The police arrived and ran and caught up alongside the man on the bank, throwing rings as he travelled down past the weir to the Lower Wick bridge.

“The police managed to drag him out. He went to hospital, thank god.

“She said he was in such a bad way mentally but I truly believe my daughter saved a life tonight if she hadn’t have seen him, and called police straight away, held him and kept him out of the water as long as she did, it would have been too late by the time the police or boats got there. I’m so very proud of her tonight!”

Police confirmed they had been called to the river near Worcester Bridge following concerns for a man’s welfare.

They pulled the man out of the water and he was then taken to hospital.

A police spokesman said: “Shortly before 12.25am officers attended Worcester Bridge following concerns for the welfare of a man. He fell into the water and after being recovered from the river was taken to hospital.”

Comments congratulating Kim on her quick actions and bravery have been posted on Facebook.

Laurie Griffin said: “Incredible... you’re a hero Kim.”

The man, who has not been identified, is expected to make a full recovery, police say.
