LAST year’s Teacher of the Year award went to Anna-Marie Rooney from Our Lady of Mt Carmel in Redditch.

Mrs Rooney was nominated for her tireless work over the last 15 years in improving the education experience of her pupils.

Reflecting on her award win, she said: “To receive a call to say that I was nominated for the award of ‘Teacher of the Year’ back in early 2019 was a complete shock to say the least.

“I was honoured to hear that parents had taken the time to nominate me for doing something that is an honour and a privilege to do each day. Teaching is in my blood; from my earliest memories of playing with my blackboard and chalk (if that doesn’t reveal my age I don’t know what will!) to undertaking my PGCE at Worcester University, it has been a wonderful adventure to say the least.

“The night of the awards was incredible. Supported by friends and colleagues we had a wonderful evening, listening to inspirational stories.

“To hear my name announced as the ‘winner’ in my category was a moment I’ll never ever forget, and will cherish forever. I’m so grateful to those who nominated me and to the Worcester News for recognising our wonderful profession as one worth celebrating, to all my colleagues who support me on a daily basis and to all the parents and children I have had the great pleasure of working alongside throughout my career.”

Nominations are now open for the 2020 Worcestershire Education Awards. There are 13 categories to enter and anyone can nominate their favourite teacher, school or training provider. This year features a new award category, with Inspirational Mentor of the Year being introduced.
