THE Cardinal’s Hat, in Friar Street, claims to be the oldest pub in Worcester, so I decided to find out a bit more about it from those who know it best.

The pub, which dates back to at least the 14th century, is one of the city’s best loved drinking spots, and it is not hard to see why as it retains much of its historic feel and decor.

Situated in Friar Street, the pub takes its name from the Medieval Franciscan Friary which dominated the area until the 1500s.

Throughout its long history, the Cardinal’s Hat has taken many different names. In the 18th century it was called the Swan and Falcon, before being re-named the Coventry Arms in the 19th century, returning to its original name in the 1950s.

In 2013 the pub underwent a substantial refurb, being re-opened by antiques expert Henry Sandon.

At the bar, I spoke to regulars Derek Edwards and Ady Breech, who both said what they valued most about the Cardinal’s Hat was the atmosphere.

Derek said: “The atmosphere is great, it has a really nice crowd - you really get to know the bar staff and the people in here which is really special.

“They’ve got a good selection of ales and lagers too which is great.”

Adey said: “They get lots of visitors from outside Worcester too so you get to meet people from all over the place. We regularly meet new people here and get friendly with them which you don’t get in many other pubs.”

In addition to its historic significance, the pub also has guest rooms upstairs, bringing in tourists from Worcestershire and beyond.

Landlord Nigel Smith, who has been at the Cardinal’s Hat for the last seven years, said keeping hold of the tradition and history of the pub is vitally important.

Mr Smith, who also runs the Fleece Inn at Bretforton, said: “I am very much about keeping hold of the tradition of the place and celebrating it.

“We restored the place when we took over while still ensuring we kept all the original features while at the same time adding to them by sourcing antique door-handles to make sure the place kept its soul.

“It is important to have that core base of local customers and then other people coming along to help build that sense of identity.”

The Cardinal’s Hat has built links with Worcester BID, the Battle of Worcester Re-enactors, the beer festival and other groups to be more active in the community.

In addition to its historic design and good choice of drinks, the pub is dog friendly and has an outdoor area to go with the three main rooms inside.

There is also a range of bar snacks and tapas platters for visitors to enjoy.

There are even rumours of a ‘pub ghost’ - the restless spirit of a young woman who has reportedly been seen drifting across the second floor in her flowing white nightgown.
