YESTERDAY a woman who worked at Worcester's Jobcentre was confirmed as having coronavirus, however this is not being treated as Worcestershire's first case of Covid-19 – here's why.

What do we know?

The job centre closed yesterday for a deep clean after it was discovered a person with a confirmed case of the virus had been in the building.

The woman in question does not live in Worcester, but in Birmingham, however she had attended training at the city's Jobcentre in Vine House, Farrier Street.

Although she attended a training day at the job centre in Vine House, she did not have any contact with claimants, a spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said.

The job centre is now open and running as normal.

How are cases of Covid-19 confirmed?

The chief medical officer is responsible for confirming cases in the UK. They release updates on the number of cases on Twitter every day at 2pm.

The areas are split into local authorities. For a local authority to confirm a case the person with the virus must have a residential address in the area.

Even if the person is not currently staying at that property - the case will still be categorised as in the postcode in which they are registered.

This is why the Worcester Jobcentre incident is being classed as a confirmed case for Birmingham and not Worcestershire.

Is there a confirmed case of coronavirus in Worcester?

No. The woman who visited Worcester is registered to an address in Birmingham; therefore she is not classed as a Worcester case.

When will we know when the first case is confirmed in the city?

When the chief medical officer announces the cases across the UK and one is found to be in Worcester. The county council will make a public announcement immediately following the confirmation from Public Health.
