A SHOP owner has denied a woman’s claim he has increased the prices of toilet roll amid the shortage caused by panic-buying during the coronavirus pandemic.

Thiruk Kumar, 42, said he has received threats from people after a woman posted a video on Facebook in which she filmed him while accusing him of putting the prices up, at his Premier convenience shop in Tolladine Road, Worcester.

The post reads: "The shop by the Texaco garage, Premier, is selling toilet rolls for double the price they are worth and tried telling me he has a delivery from Birmingham and the toilet roll got damaged and the prices got ripped off. What so the price fell off all of them? There are four price tags on each pack."

Worcester News:

Az Hussian, 36, is a family friend of Mr Kumar and said he and his wife and their four children have been badly affected by the reaction to the woman’s video.

Mr Hussain said: "Mr Kumar is a good man, a very good man, despite having health problems and four children to look after he still wants to provide for his community.
"Before all this Facebook stuff he was offering delivery services to the over 65s. He only wants to help people. His son and daughter asked him what he was doing to help people who were struggling so he has gone out to the over 65s and provided them with groceries.

"The woman in question has been harassing us for a while now, she has been sending us threatening messages and trying to make out we are scamming people when we are just trying to help. We have limited the amount of toilet paper customers can buy because people were fighting over it.

"Mr Kumar has a family and a health problem, he should be self-isolating for his own protection, but all he ever thinks about is others. Now due to this woman's hate campaign he is having to deal with the worry and the upset from that. I feel really sorry for him.

"The only positive that has come of it is our regulars coming in and asking us if we are okay. We love the community round here and will continue to serve them as best as we can."

The woman has since deleted the Facebook post and refused to comment any further on the issue.
