RESIDENTS of Battenhall in Worcester are being trained to record cars that are speeding in the area.

Helen Wicks co-ordinated the project after getting fed up with the speeding in Timberdine Avenue where the 52-year-old lives.

Mrs Wicks said: "The issue of speed has come up several times when some of the residents meet up at the local PACT meetings. Battenhall road comes up a lot as well.

"When the offer of being trained and have the opportunity to use the speed radar came up, I was keen to take part. I’m a big believer of ‘acting on’ concerns or complaints when they come up. There are 8 of us who volunteered to be a part of the community speed watch.

"We all have our reasons for volunteering. I think we share the same goal which is to remind drivers of the speed limit and ensure pedestrians are also safe around the roads.

"This will certainly be the case when we move on to Timberdine Avenue given that there are two schools off this road and shockingly no speed calming measures in place.

I live in Timberdine Avenue and as well as the parking issues speeding is a big problem.

The scheme is enthusiastically backed by Councillor Louis Stephen.

He said: "Lots of Battenhall residents have raised concerns about speeding cars especially in places like Timberdine Avenue.

"The police have limited resources so are keen to enlist the support of the community in monitoring and helping to enforce safe driving in the area. Eight of us were trained and that means together we can cover quite a few areas and different times of day."

The community speed watch plan to go out in groups of three to perform the speed watch and record the drivers details on a prepared sheet, provided by the police.

They will record motorists car details for those vehicle exceeding the national speed limit. This information will then be forwarded to the police who will issue an advisory letter to those who have been identified as exceeding the limit.
