Swindon campaigners are urging the government to extend the Brexit transition period because of the coronavirus crisis.

Swindon for Europe members have sent letters to Swindon’s MPs to try to change the deadline which is scheduled for the end of the year.

Covid-19 has forced countries across Europe to impose a strict lockdown to halt the spread of the virus.

PM Boris Johnson has insisted there is no need to extend the deadline.

Here’s what you said on Facebook:

Elspeth Hughes: “No, it would be silly to drag it on. We would possibly be involved in costs relating to expenses incurred by the EU coping with the virus throughout the other 27 member state.”

Peter Reynolds: “I suppose it would depend on how the situation goes. It could always be something to consider at the time but campaigning for it right now seems a little transparent.

“Testing times ahead and things have never been so uncertain.”

David White: “Just get the job done and get out of Europe and maybe we can get on with looking after our own people. Covid is not an excuse to delay the exit.”

Jan Bailey: “Let’s crash out, after all they found the magic money tree forest so we will be fine.”

John Lister: “Took us long enough to get out, thanks to the indecision of politicians! Don’t give them the opportunity for a repeat show.”

Lyn McGaw: “Don’t start that rubbish again. Out, Out, Out.”

Reg Burnard: “Why delay?Just get on with it.”

Angie Kearns: “Oh here we go. Wondered when this would come up.”

Terrence Reynolds: “We have left the EU, sort it, it's only the Remainers who think different.”

Richard French: “No need as it's the EU that wants our money now.”

Robert Masey: “Let’s get it sorted and out of way.”

Jean Chandler: “No point in a delay.”

Andy Watson: “Doesn’t matter what we think we are not experts.”

James Carol: “It's about what people see as a priority.

“Either they value the lives of their family, friends and neighbours or they don’t.

“No country is going to be able to negotiate in good faith or at any kind of realistic level but leaving the EU has always been about undeliverable fantasy and in many cases totally changing what they claim they voted for.

“Mind you, this is the week that saw our conservative government refuse to work with our European friends to source ventilators.

“Maybe lives and health can be ignored for the sake of a fantasy that doesn’t exist.

“I`m sure there will be some really interesting well sourced discussion on this topic.”

George Taylor: “The answer appears to be don’t care. Funny that the people calling others selfish for getting exercise will happily deny medical care to the whole UK.

“I wonder if they could name the family or friends they are prepared to lose for their Brexit unicorn.

“It’s not like proud ignorance is new to Brexit discussion.

Matt Jury: “Even at a time when a we are supposed to be pulling together as a nation these parasites are attempting to overtime the overwhelming desires of a very clear majority of people for their own ends..

“You people are a disgrace. Perhaps the restrictions that will be in place at the end of the year may prevent something like this happening again.

“Stop thinking about your own petty ideological failings and get behind the country.”
