TWO city schools have been hit by crime in recent days, with a councillor saying it is the last thing teachers and authorities should be dealing with.

Both targeted schools - Perry Wood Primary school, in Ronkswood, and Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, in Battenhall, are currently only open to children of key workers, under the government's Covid-19 lockdown measures.

Perry Wood Primary and Nursery School was hit at 3am yesterday morning, with several outbuildings broken into by three unknown offenders who police say gained access from nearby Newtown Road.

Officers report that initial investigations at the St Albans Close-based school had shown nothing had been taken.

Meanwhile, sometime over the weekend, between Friday, April 17 and Monday, April 20, a shipping container was broken into at Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, based in Timberdine Avenue.

A number of items were taken by the thieves including a a Stihl hedge cutter, a garden blow vac, a charger and battery for the leaf sweeper, and a post hole borer.

Following the latest incidents Battenhall city councillor, Louis Stephen, said: "It is very worrying to hear. "The staff, police and authorities have got much better things to be doing than dealing with break in and theft during the coronavirus pandemic."

This is the second time a school in Battenhall has been hit by crime in the last six months, as Cherry Orchard Primary School suffered vandalism during half term week last October. In that incident vandals smashed windows, broke fence panels and threw flower pots across the playground.

We also reported yesterday how a family had caught a man on CCTV acting suspiciously on the driveway of their Ronkswood home on Saturday, warning people to be vigilant about opportunistic lockdown crime.

No one from West Mercia Police, or either school, was available for comment.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting 0072S for the Perry Wood school incident, or the 22/33263/20 crime number for the Blessed Edward School incident.
