A POLICEMAN has been called a “hero” after rescuing a woman from a Worcester bridge.

As we previously reported a woman who was straddling a pedestrian bridge which crosses City Walls Road was talked down by a police officer on Sunday.

However, now Aled John, from Worcester, who lives in a flat that overlooks the bridge, has spoked to us to praise the police.

He said: “I heard sirens and shouting at the bridge, so I came to look outside of my window. I saw a young girl in her early 20s with one leg over the bridge’s railing and police dotted around the area.”

Mr John said police had stopped traffic on the road whilst the officer was talking to the woman “very calmly” at around 4pm.

He added: “He approached her very slowly, asking if this was a good enough distance. Each time he edged closer.

“Eventually he got within two metres of the girl and they talked for a few minutes. Everything seemed to be calming down until the young lady started to shout again.

“At this point she leaned over the bridge and went to fall off by bringing her other leg over.

“The officer spotted this and as soon as her leg started to leave the safety of the bridge, he lunged towards her and grabbed her in his arms and brought her to the floor of the bridge.

“At this point all the officers sprang into action and ensured the young girl wasn’t going anywhere.

“She was hysterical and very upset. Eventually they had to handcuff the girl and walk her off of the bridge towards town centre.”

Mr John added: “The policeman grabbed her as she went to jump. She leaned left to fall off and he hugged her and brought her safely to the ground.

“He deserves a pint.

“They handled it so well and without the one policeman jumping into action, putting himself and his family at risk of Covid-19 too mind, this young girl may have been seriously hurt or worse.”

Two paramedics also attended the scene to check the woman for injuries.

A police spokesman said: “We were called at around 3.50pm to a concern for the safety of a woman, on a pedestrian bridge on City Walls Road, in Worcester.

“Officers attended, and spoke with the woman, who was then taken to hospital in an ambulance.”
