A CITY school is appealing for the public to help look after some of its pupils in need.

Christopher Whitehead Language College and Sixth Form wants to help its vulnerable pupils who may be struggling during the coronavirus outbreak.

Headteacher Neil Morris said that during lockdown, the school had received requests for help from families facing financial hardship.

The school has set up online classwork but some of its pupils are without technology that could help them - and Mr Morris said despite applying for the government’s technology support scheme for schools, the school was yet to receive any laptops or tablets.

He said: “Throughout lockdown we have received numerous discreet requests for help from some of our most vulnerable families who are facing financial hardship due to Covid19.

"Worcester Foodbank support has increased by 80 per cent and 30 per cent of our families are not able to access the online work that teachers are setting to keep students engaged in their education. We have applied for laptops and tablets from the government ‘technology support scheme for schools’, but have not received any to date. Students are trying to access work via their phones.”

He appealed for donations of working laptops and tablets and the school has set up a charity balloon race, called “School’s Out Hogwarts Race.”

Supporters can buy a “virtual balloon” for £3 and follow the virtual race for seven days. Prizes include £500 cash and an iPad plus £10 book tokens.

Mr Morris added: “In addition to raising funds we want to build on the community spirit that has been fostered during the pandemic, which saw our DT staff raise money to buy materials and make vital PPE equipment for the NHS and keyworkers, and bring our community together once again and have some fun.” To take part in the virtual race, head to https://ecoracing.co/ and search for ‘Christopher Whitehead Language College’.
