A HIT and run driver has been arrested following a three-car crash where he left his children behind in the smashed car.

The driver escaped on foot following the crash in Brickfields Road, Worcester, leaving his family of two children in the car in the early hours of this morning.

The man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, failing to stop after a crash and child neglect offences.

Inspector Liz Warner said: “The driver of one of the vehicles, a man in his 30s, left the scene on foot and was arrested a short time later on suspicion of driving a vehicle and failing to provide a specimen of breath, failing to stop after an accident and child neglect offences.”

Fire crew, ambulance and police were called to the scene just after 1.30am to reports of a three-car crash, two of which were stationary.

No one was injured but the adult and two children left behind at the scene were cared for by West Midlands Ambulance Service.

The road was closed following the crash.

The cars and scene were made safe by fire service personnel and the incident was left with West Mercia Police.

Police posted on Twitter: "Team C attended Brickfields Road in the early hours after this vehicle crashed and the driver made off, leaving his family in the car.

"He was located nearby and arrested. Don't drink and drive, especially with your kids in the car!

“Luckily no injuries."

Police have thanked members of the public for their assistance.

The fire service shared on Twitter: "Road traffic collision involves multiple cars in Brickfields Road, Worcester.

"Involves three cars made safe.

"Road closed.

"One adult and two children with West Midlands Ambulance Service."
