TENS of millions of pounds have been paid out to city businesses as a lifeline during lockdown.

Worcester City Council said it has processed payments to 1,435 businesses throughout the city making the most of three government grant funds set up to help those struggling because of coronavirus.

Council bosses say a range of business have been supported including hairdressers, estate agents, restaurants, hotels, cafes, mechanics, printers and recruitment agencies since March.

The majority of the money has been paid out through the Government's small business grants fun and the retail, hospitality and leisure grants fund.

More than 80 businesses in the city have received a discretionary grant.

Shane Flynn, director of resources at Worcester City Council, said: “These grants have literally been a lifeline for many Worcester businesses.

“A wide range have received essential support – including hairdressers, estate agents, restaurants, hotels, cafes, mechanics, printers and recruitment agencies.

“The council has worked hard to turn around the very large volume of grants, and in many cases it has been possible to make payments just a few days after we have received a business’s details.”

However, some businesses could miss out on vital money if they do not apply before the end of the month.

“Qualifying businesses simply need to make sure we have all the right information so that we can give them the financial support they urgently need. But the clock is ticking, as the scheme closes on August 28," the council's director of resources added.

Small businesses in the city with a rateable value of up to £15,000 and operating businesses in retail, hospitality and leisure premises with a rateable value of up to £51,000 that have not already contacted the council should do so now, the council said.
