AN EXTRA million pounds has been given to carry out much-needed repairs and essential maintenance work to schools across the county.

Worcestershire has been allocated an extra £1.3 million from the Government's condition allocation fund which will pay for dozens of projects including work to fix schools in poor condition, health and safety issues and building compliance.

The extra money means the county will be allocated just over £4 million for the next year.

Councillor Marcus Hart, cabinet member for education and skill at Worcestershire County Council, welcomed the extra funding.

"It’s great news that thanks to an increase in Worcestershire’s funding allocation for this year, we are able to address more issues than we otherwise would," he said.

“Ensuring our school buildings are maintained is a key priority of the county council, and one area that we will continue to improve, in order to help our pupils reach their full potential.”

Two primary schools in Worcester are set to share a large amount of money for much-needed improvement work.

Plans to carry out roof repairs at Stanley Road Primary School and install fire doors at Carnforth School totalling £229,000 have also been backed by the Government and will be carried out in the next year.

The council said there are 103 eligible schools in Worcestershire which it will work with alongside other partners to find where the work is most needed and what money schools will need.

The council also said work was carried out at 41 schools as part of condition projects last year and a further 34 schools look to be supported in the next 12 months.
